In June, I attended the UC Berkeley AI Hackathon. I signed up after reading an interview of someone who won Apple’s Swift Student Challenge, where they asked her how she learned to code. She said that she “learned through workshops at a hackathon,” so I figured I’d give it a shot myself, since I didn’t know how to code and needed to fill up my weekend. Spoiler alert: I still don’t know how to code.

 

This may seem like a fringe issue of the anomalies and social rejects of our current landscape, but the terrifyingly extraordinary thing about it is: as these machines have become more human, you, the human, have taken every effort to become more machine. 

So here’s a proposal: get a hobby you’re bad at. Let it stay bad. Don’t show anyone. Don’t try to get better. Don’t let it mean anything. Let it be boring, silly, ugly, indulgent. Let it be yours.
