An Evening of Music and Dance with Melissa Cruz and Kalifeña The dynamism and allure of flamenco come alive on stage in an evening of dance and music with Melissa Cruz. Joined by her cast of seasoned professionals and dedicated studio dancers, Cruz presents a diverse program of dances, expressing the full spectrum of human emotion. This performance of Flamenco a las 8 features Kalifeña, a music and dance ensemble directed by Cruz, inspired by an idea to unite voices of women who, despite their diverse backgrounds, have a thread of commonality between them – the study of flamenco, the art form from Andalucía, Spain deemed by UNESCO as a treasure of World Cultural Heritage. Kalifeña melds original compositions and traditional flamenco styles with flamenco dance as its cornerstone. Be moved by an intense and passionate evening of Bay Area flamenco culture with its zeal for community, respect for the art form, and deep emotion, hallmarks of this beautiful tradition that continue to generate new inspiration for itself and its audiences. “Any dancer could make pained faces. But Cruz is clearly possessed by the duende — the spirit that drives this deeply introspective art.” -Rachel Howard, SF Chronicle Schedule 8:00pm – 10:00pm – Performance Kalifeña is: Melissa Cruz – dance and percussion Caro Acuña Olvera – vocals and percussion Luna Alonso – vocals and cello Bob San – guitar and bass Jesse Torre – guitar Katiana Vilá – vocals and percussion

The festival will take place on Grant Avenue, between California and Broadway, where attendees will see a variety of exciting activities, including arts and crafts vendors, delicious food stalls, live music, local contemporary entertainment, mooncakes, lion dancing, and more. The festivities will kick off on Saturday (9/27/25) with a grand parade at 11:00 am, led by beauty queens, cultural performers, and lion dancers. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Yau Kung Moon Association will present a lion dance and martial arts performance, setting the stage for a day filled with diverse and exciting entertainment. The 2025 theme is Monkey King to celebrate this mythical character known as Sun Wukong. The Monkey King will make a special appearance at this year’s Autumn Moon Festival along with acrobatic followers of the Shaolin monks on both Saturday and Sunday. The Monkey King, a central character in the 16th Century Chinese novel Journey to the West, is a powerful, mischievous, and rebellious figure. Born from a magical stone, he possesses supernatural abilities, including immense strength, shapeshifting, and the ability to travel vast distances in a single bound. His presence at the Autumn Moon Festival is a celebration of this rich cultural heritage.

Helen DeMichiel’s BETWEEN THE SUN AND THE SIDEWALK (Documentary, 76 min) follows two fiercely dedicated young Latino political organizers leading a team of new recruits to mobilize their community to support a sugary drink tax. When the state government passes a stealth law to ban all local soda taxes until 2030, these young activists fearlessly battle the corporate lobbying efforts to block them. In their goal to ignite a grassroots movement for health justice, the young organizers, Christian and Aurora, are undaunted. Tested during their fight for local democracy and the right to vote on important issues, the film’s heroes overcome doubt, fear, and powerful resistance as they dare to fight back against the goliath American beverage industry.
