Happy Hanukkah to all of our community members that celebrate. 🕎
Hanukkah starts on the 25th day of Kislev, the ninth month of the Hebrew calendar.
The Hebrew calendar follows the lunar cycle, which means that Hanukkah begins on a different date each year on the calendar we use, as that is based on the sun cycles.

The Charles River cleanup was a volunteer initiative organized by Reilley Forest '24 as part of his Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) program.
Reilley and other volunteers, including students and teachers, met at Newman on a Saturday morning and collected and disposed of approximately 30 pounds of trash!
Reilley plans to organize and offer the opportunity again during the spring semester.

This week the Social Justice Club partnered with the Language Department to put on a bake sale featuring traditional Spanish foods, some of which were made by students during their Spanish class. All proceeds from the bake sale are being sent to flood relief efforts in Valencia, Spain home of Spanish teacher Profe. Rodrigo Sanz and her family. Great job to all involved, fully embracing our founding motto: Cor Ad Cor Loquitur (Let heart speak to heart)! ❤️

🌟We are excited to introduce Pina, Alice, and Milo for our first round of Admissions Ambassador Spotlights!🌟
Our Admissions Ambassadors play a vital role in welcoming prospective families and connecting them with our school community. From giving tours and answering questions from a student’s perspective to attending admissions events and helping new students settle in, they are the bridge between prospective families and our school.
In addition to leading tours, our Ambassadors also support virtual open houses, write personalized notes to prospective and admitted students, and stay connected over the summer to ensure new students feel right at home come fall.

Happy Veterans Day from The Newman School community!
🌟 Did you know that when Newman was founded in 1945, the school's primary focus was to educate young men returning from military service at the end of World War II? Newman then began to gradually expand in order to serve both young men and women in their high school years!
This past week, The Cardinal Theater Company's fall production took place. Students performed the play Epic Proportions by Larry Coen and David Crane. The play is a comedy set in the 1930s on the set of a huge blockbuster epic film production. It follows two brothers who run away to become movie stars alongside the film's assistant director. Along the way are a variety of colorful characters, both within and working on the movie as they film everything from Gladiator Battles to Biblical Reenactments.
A total of 26 students took part in the production in both on and off stage roles. Congratulations to all on a successful show filled with energy and humor! We can't wait for the next one! 🎭

Students in Ms. Esposito’s 10th grade humanities class enjoyed a trip to @bplboston to investigate its history.
They toured the McKim Building and Courtyard and investigated what these places communicated about Boston’s past.
Connections students made:
💰 Boston was very wealthy.
📚 Boston supported and valued education.
⛪️ Christianity played an important role in Boston culture.
🏛️ European architecture was influential on the design of the BPL Courtyard.
The goal of this field trip was to inspire and show students how to complete their final humanities project which included investigating a Boston neighborhood, statue or street.

PRACTICING GRATITUDE ♥️
Research shows that practicing gratitude - 15 minutes a day, five days a week, for at least six weeks- can enhance mental wellness and possibly promote a lasting change in perspective. Gratitude and its mental health benefits can also positively affect your physical health.
On Friday, advisors initiated a conversation with advisees about what gratitude is and the benefits of reflecting on it, and the students were tasked with coming up with two to three things they feel grateful for in their lives.
The final product created a “Gratitude Bulletin Board!”

During March Break, 21 students and four adults traveled to South Africa!
📍They visited Johannesburg, Kruger National Park, and Cape Town.
♥️ In the words of one student, “this was both a bonding experience and a learning journey.”
🇿🇦 Students interacted with South Africans and learned about the culture, injustices, and the environment. During each individual experience throughout the country, we recognized both similarities and differences about life in South Africa and life in the US. In particular, many students were struck by the open conversation about the history of apartheid and the visible effort of people of different races and economic levels to focus on living in harmony.

Congratulations to The Cardinal Theatre Company on two amazing performances of 𝑨 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒔!
𝑨 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒔 is the story of 13 year old Conor. His mother has cancer and he is struggling at home and at school. Every night at seven minutes after midnight, a monster comes to him to tell him a story. The monster is the Yew tree from outside his window. This monster becomes Conor’s only means of dealing with the pain and anger he is feeling. 𝑨 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒔 asks us to confront how we express our anger and hurt and how we understand truth and reality.

At our monthly assembly, we welcomed two amazing women to speak with students and faculty - a perfect way to engage our community for Women’s History Month.
Two sisters, and best friends, Greydy and Gabby Diaz discussed how they created success from their passions - basketball, faith, and family.
Greydy is a former basketball star and now a writer, producer, storyteller, and host.
Gabby is a former basketball star and now an agent and lawyer.
The independence, friendships, exposure, and experiences they gained while attending an independent school was the foundation of their success and confidence, and students are lucky to have that at Newman!
Greydy and Gabby’s message:
💥It’s ok to pivot and change with your passions, or to change careers, life paths, and goals to feel more fulfilled.
💥 Bet on yourself!
💥 Set goals for yourself and break down the goals into monthly and annual goals.
💥 Never stop being a student.
💥 Always do work that will inspire the next generation of leaders.
💥 Make an impact on the world around us.

In 7th grade design class, students are learning about the “design cycle”, which provides them with a framework for problem solving.
Working in groups, students conducted research and developed ideas about how to create the tallest tower possible out of popsicle sticks and tape.

Last week, Dr. Bob Hall stopped by Newman for a visit!
Dr. Hall was a beloved HL Math teacher at Newman for 11 years and also helped start and coach the robotics program.
Bob currently resides in Morocco with his wife and daughter, but despite the distance, his heart remains connected with our community.

On Thursday, the Newman community welcomed Marty Walsh back to Newman! ♥️
As a 1986 graduate, he shared how the support, confidence, and compassion he received at Newman created a solid foundation for his goals and life.
Students were so excited and engaged with the former Mayor of Boston in small groups and one-on-one.
He left them with this great metaphor:

𝙀𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙚𝙧.

🐉 This is the year of the dragon, and is celebrated from February 10 - 24.
🐉According to the zodiac system, those born during dragon years are said to be “visionary leaders with a strong sense of self, energetic, determined, idealistic, and independent.”

Theatre students in year one (11th grade) of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program just completed a study of Balinese Shadow Puppetry.
Inspired by that traditional practice, they are working in small groups to create their own modern shadow puppet shows.
This exploration tasks them to explore an unfamiliar theatre practice and develop new skills.
They will be performing their completed pieces for their peers in class!

Senior DP2 Art students visited the Institute of Contemporary Art. 🖼️
At @icaboston students looked at curatorial choices or how the art was displayed. Seeing contemporary art and how it is hung will help them with their personal exhibition design for their senior show.
They also viewed great works from the Caribbean, Taiwan, Vietnam, and even Boston.
A great fit for our international class and city school!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement is reflected throughout our curriculum in grades 7-12.
This day, and the coming months are important times to reflect and honor this movement and many civil rights leaders who worked and continue to work for change.
We also demonstrate to our students that black history, women’s history, and indigenous histories are year long endeavors that inform all of our discussions.

🌟 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT 🌟
Mia Brillantes '26
What began as a fun hobby blossomed into a lucrative business and the perfect idea for her tenth grade personal project!
Over the summer, Mia was introduced to the idea of "upcycling." Also known as creative reuse, upcycling is the "process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials, or products perceived to be of greater quality, such as artistic value or environmental value."
Mia hosted a jean drive at Newman and in her neighborhood. With bins full of jeans, she was able to save jeans from littering landfills by creating denim patchwork skirts! The skirts are super versatile, have a cool aesthetic, and don't have to be "perfect" to look good! Starting with the waistband for sizing, Mia uses a sewing machine, which she learned how to use at age 10, to create mini ($45), knee ($55), or ankle ($65) length skirts. Each order takes about 3-5 hours to make, and Mia averages about three order per week.
This past fall, Mia attended the sustainable fashion conference, "How Sustainable Fashion Can Help Save the Planet." She met with a professional designer who works with denim patchwork and he gave her tips for working with denim!
In addition to her sustainable artistic talent, Mia is an AMAZING cartoon artist, active in theatre productions at Newman, engaged in competitive rock climbing, and speaks Spanish!
Check out the cool skirt she made for Ms. Bahr!

On December 5th, our community joined together for our annual Festival of Lights to share traditions from home and across the world. 🕯️
Whether through spoken words, a piano concerto, or a holiday carol, the diversity and international focus of Newman created a welcoming and comforting way to enter the winter season.
As Head of School Mike Schafer shared with our community, "we recognize and honor that being a member of this special community is more than simply being present - at our best, it is in the believing - believing in yourself, and believing in others, and believing in something larger than ourselves like the transformative power and spirit of reflection."
