  • New Field Day Information

    May 15, 2024

    Dear P.S. 295 School Community,

It was with regret that we were not able to host Field Day on Wednesday May 15 as originally planned due to unfavorable weather conditions. Although the weather necessitated the changes, rest assured that we have made arrangements to ensure that alternate Field Day arrangements will allow students the opportunity to have a fun and memorable day.

Field Day will take place at the P.S. 295 campus this year.  Due to the physical and space restrictions of the campus that we share with another school, Field Day will need to happen across two days to accommodate all our students and family members who wish to join us. Our Field Days will happen according to the following schedule:

    • June 11th, Field Day for PreK-2nd grade.
    • June 12th Field Day for 3rd-5th grade.

We understand the importance of family involvement in our school events, and we want to continue the tradition of families being part of the Field Days experience. On each day, parents are welcome to join us by signing in on the 18th Street side of the building at designated sign-in stations. As always, when visiting the school, visitors will be required to show identification, sign in and wear visitor stickers. Once signed in, adults will be asked to wait in the cafeteria at designated tables until their child’s class is ready to begin the games.

Field Day activities will commence at approximately 9:00 and continue until roughly 11:00 when we will pause for a picnic-style lunch at the school playground.  When Field Day activities are completed around 12:30, families who wish to take their child home early may do so by completing the sign-out sheet with a teacher before leaving.  More detailed information will follow as the dates get closer.

We understand that changes like these can be inconvenient, but we appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we navigate these adjustments to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all our students.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you at Field Day!

    Sincerely,

    Valerie Vanderpuije

    Principal

  • Safer Access System

    May 10, 2024

    Dear Families,

We have some important news to share regarding the safety measures at our school. In line with our
commitment to enhance security practices, all NYC Public Schools will have a Safer Access system installed
during the 2023-25 school years. The Safer Access system is designed to strengthen our existing safety and
security practices as part of the overall visitor protocols at our school.

    What is Safer Access?

The primary objective of the Safer Access system is to ensure that all doors remain locked outside of the
morning-entry and afternoon-dismissal periods. When school doors are locked, visitors wishing to gain
access to the building will ring the intercom at the main entrance door (or ADA-accessibility entrance if
applicable) and identify themselves before access is granted into the school building. Safer Access allows our
dedicated staff assigned to the main desk (School Safety Agents and/or school staff) to be able to see and
speak with visitors before granting them access inside. Please be assured that all visitors to our school will
continue to be treated with courtesy, professionalism, and respect while awaiting entry into our building.
In addition to enhancing safety, this system allows for easy access for first responders during an emergency.
Once our Safer Access system is installed and operational, our school staff (including School Safety Agents)
and students will receive training on using the system as well as how to support all visitors in accordance
    with our policy.

We believe Safer Access will greatly contribute to maintaining a secure learning environment for our
    students and staff.

We look forward to the NYC Public Schools Safer Access system creating a safer environment for everyone.
Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for your continued support in keeping
    our school community safe.

    Warm regards,
    Valerie Vanderpuije

  • New Assistant Principal

    Dear PS 295 Community,

I hope that everyone was able to take advantage of the Mid-Winter Recess to connect with your children and family in ways that may not always be possible during the regular school year. Just before the break, we celebrated the 100th day of school. For many students, particularly in the lower grades, it is an important landmark in the year that serves as a reminder of just how far we have all come since September.

September of 2023 brought the introduction of Ms. Jeannette Echeverri, who joined the PS 295 community as the interim acting assistant principal. Since then, she has been an instrumental part of the school community. You would have seen her at the - whether helping to organize the Holiday Parranda celebration she brought the idea to PS 295. You may have engaged with her while she was taking part in a PTA meeting or Cafe Conmigo. You may even have seen her at the Winter performance of Peter Pan. I am happy to announce the appointment of Ms. Echeverri as assistant principal of PS 295.

I take joy in sharing a letter with you that she has written to the community. Please see her message to the community below.

    Sincerely,

  • Crossing Guard Shortage City Wide

    Dear Friends,

Currently, there is shortage of School Crossing Guards citywide, and due to this shortage many of our crossing post are left unmanned
placing the safety of our students and their families in a danger while traveling to and from school. In an effort to help alleviate this issue
The NYPD is asking you to help the city recruit SCGs. Please circulate this information to your friends and family.
