HOW TORQUE CONVERTERS WORK
IN GENERAL TERMS, A TORQUE CONVERTER IS A TYPE OF FLUID COUPLING (TORQUE MULTIPLIER) THAT IS USED TO TRANSFER ROTATION POWER FROM A PRIME MOVER, SUCH AS A COMBUSTION ENGINE OR ELECTRICAL MOTOR, TO A ROTATING DRIVEN LOAD.
If you have some knowledge of manual transmissions, you are aware that an engine is connected to a transmission by way of a clutch. Without a clutch, a car would not be able to come to a dead stop without killing the engine. The challenge with automatic transmission engines is that their transmissions have no clutch that disconnects the transmission from the engine. Rather, they use a device called a converter. It may not look like much, but there is a lot going on inside.
