Ms. Woods’ remarkable life is a legacy of Black history and culture, notably as a trombonist for The International Sweethearts of Rhythm—the first integrated, all-female big band. This group challenged racial and gender barriers, founded by her father, Laurence C. Jones, at the Piney Woods School.
